Willie ‘El Diablo’, ‘Devil’ Wells
St. Louis Stars, Detroit Wolves, Homestead Grays, Kansas City Monarchs, Chicago American Giants, Newark Eagles, Birmingham Black Barons (partial list).
Willie Wells was born on August 10, 1905, in Austin, Texas. He grew up playing baseball in the sandlots of Austin, and was a standout two-sport athlete at Anderson High School, where he developed a reputation as an intensely fierce competitor in both baseball and football. He attended Huston College in Austin.
Considered one of the top two black shortstops before 1950 and the finest shortstop of his era, Willie was a unique blend of speed, power, contact hitting and batting for average. His knowledge of the strike zone allowed him coax walks out of pitchers. He was a superb base runner. As an infielder, he was a study of excellence, committing few errors, and could turn the double play while displaying great fielding range.
